Wanted! We are looking for the worst road in your region! Why do we want it? Because something exciting happens when you add a little VESTENAMER® 8012 Reactive Modifier to rubberized asphalt concrete!

The use of crumb rubber, or ground tire rubber (GTR), to enhance the durability and performance of asphalt concrete pavements is well recognized. The GTR/asphalt mix makes roads

  • more flexible under traffic loads
  • reduces ice formation, noise level, embrittlement and cracking.
  • It can be applied in thinner coats,
  • and it consumes scrap tires to the advantage of the environment.

When heated in terminal blending tanks, however, the tacky GTR/asphalt mix causes problems in:

  • delivery truck beds, pavement lay down equipment, rakes, shovels etc. where the increased tackiness is a major problem, and the clean-up takes time.
  • the roadbed where the GTR/asphalt concrete has to be cooled to reduce tackiness and prevent it from sticking to the steel cylinders of the rolling equipment which causes "pick up" of the pavement onto the roller.
  • the narrow window for compacting the material before it sets up, since you must cool it before rolling it and this decreases the window time frame for rolling and makes it very difficult to handle.


The prevention of this tackiness problem takes costly time. We eliminate this tackiness problem with our TOR.


VESTENAMER® Polyoctenamer solves mixing and paving problems

A small addition of VESTENAMER® pellets dramatically overcomes these problems, leading to an easier-to-process mix. Because it changes the asphalt concrete mix from a thermoplastic (prone to rutting) material to a crosslinked, thermoset material, (rut resistant) it gives a superior road surface!

Crumb rubber alone as a modifier functions as a non-reactive additive to asphalt. VESTENAMER® polyoctenamer reacts chemically with the crumb rubber, the chemicals extracted out of the GTR, and the asphalt to produce a uniform, low-tack, rubber-like composite. This chemical bond is due to the double-bond structure of the VESTENAMER® product, which permits cross-linking of with the sulfur associated with the asphaltenes and maltenes in the asphalt, as well as with the sulfur at the surface of the GTR to create a macropolymer network. VESTENAMER® polyoctenamer also chemically bonds to the aggregate surface, which reduces stripping.
